GCNS CEO Roundtable
by Global Compact Network Singapore

4 June 2019

The GCNS CEO Roundtable is an invitation-only dialogue that convenes business leaders from local and regional MNCs and SMEs for a dynamic exchange of insights on corporate sustainability. Conducted under Chatham House Rules, the Roundtable invites C-suite participants to share their experiences on corporate sustainability, observations on the current landscape of the movement in Singapore and the region, and opinions on how responsible business practices can unlock further opportunities.

The theme for this year's Roundtable is "Carbon Pricing & Competitiveness: Thriving in the Transition to A Low-Carbon Economy".

Internal carbon pricing has been gaining momentum in recent years, with nearly 1,400 companies worldwide seeking to price their own carbon emissions. Apart from the positive health and environmental externalities that they tend to effect, such carbon pricing mechanisms are increasingly seen as key risk management tools, drivers of innovation for clean and low-emission technologies, as well as powerful signals for championing corporate responsibility.

As the core engine of growth in a country's economy, the private sector has a momentous opportunity to take the lead on internal carbon pricing. How can it be used to gain a competitive edge while supporting a global transition to a more sustainable economy? How does internal carbon pricing play a role in businesses' operational and investment strategies, against the backdrop of Singapore's recently-implemented carbon tax?
