Why Sustainable Fashion may be More Oval than Circular

Today, around 90 million tonnes of textile waste - equivalent to 540 billion t-shirts - are being generated and disposed of each year globally, but only less than 1% of it is being recycled. With the growing global fashion industry, the amount of textile waste is expected to grow to over 134 million tonnes by 2030.

Circular fashion aims to 'design out waste' by ditching the linear 'take-make-waste' model and adopting a closed-loop production system, including responsible manufacturing, use, and end-of-life, for every garment.

Textile recycling has been identified as a critical priority for the fashion industry in the wider transition towards a circular economy, but industrial-scale recycling of textiles remains elusive and expensive. With development missing expectations, circular fashion seems to be taking shape as an oval rather than a circle.

This webinar will feature a discussion on:

  • The latest technology and innovations in textile recycling;
  • The USD 500 billion economic opportunity in transforming the way our clothes are designed, sold and used; and
  • How stakeholders across the value chain, including businesses and individuals, can play a part in driving fashion circularity.
