Co-founder & CEO
Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS)
Co-founder and CEO of Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) Bob Mumgaard sees a future powered by clean, unlimited, fusion energy. Founded in 2018, CFS is a private fusion company combining established science with breakthrough magnet technology to bring high-field fusion plants to market. Our mission is to commercialize fusion energy and bring clean energy to the grid to combat climate change. CFS has raised more than $2 billion from leading global investors and employs over 200.
While at MIT, Mumgaard contributed to the design of tokamaks using high-temperature superconductors (HTS). As an MIT Fellow, he studied entrepreneurship, risk-retirement, and partnerships to transition fusion from laboratory to market. He and his team worked to identify strategies combining private financing with academic resources that led to CFS’s novel commercialization approach to fusion and the unique CFS-MIT collaboration model.
Mumgaard has a Ph.D. in applied plasma physics and an M.S. in nuclear engineering from MIT, and a B.S. in mechanical engineering and a B.S. in engineering physics from the University of Nebraska.
