Ecosperity Week 2021 Reinforces Global Calls for a Sustainable Recovery

  • Themed “Tomorrow Starts Today – From Crisis to Opportunity”, this year’s Ecosperity Week will take place in Singapore from 28 to 30 September 2021
  • Discussions at the event will chart a roadmap for a sustainable future and deep dive into the topics of decarbonisation and climate action, reimagining nature and resources, and sustainable investing and financing

Ecosperity Week 2021 will rally global business leaders, policy-makers, investors and civil society to take an urgent and collective response to the global climate emergency. Themed 'Tomorrow Starts Today – From Crisis to Opportunity', this year’s Ecosperity Week will provide perspectives on the critical pathways to address the existential threats of climate change and nature loss.

“The message from the latest reports on the global climate emergency is clear: we are at the dawn of a critical decade and need bold and urgent action to reduce emissions for a net zero world”, said Dr Steve Howard, Chief Sustainability Officer, Temasek.

“The public and private sectors must work together to advance new ways of doing business and divert significantly more capital and resources towards enabling a sustainable future.”

Taking place from 28 to 30 September 2021, Ecosperity Week 2021 is presented by Temasek and brings together seven other partner events. It will feature keynote addresses by Mdm Halimah Yacob, President of the Republic of Singapore; Mr Heng Swee Keat, Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies; Mr Lawrence Wong, Minister for Finance.

There will also be engaging panel discussions and fireside chats with global leaders from the private sector and civil society, including Mr Larry Fink, Chairman & CEO, BlackRock; Mr Bill Gates, Co-chair, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; Ms Huo Li, Deputy Director of Corporate Engagement, The Nature Conservancy China Programme; Ms Akanksha Khatri, Head of Nature and Biodiversity, World Economic Forum; Mr David A.M. Wallerstein, Chief eXploration Officer & Senior Executive Vice President, Tencent Holdings; Mr Bill Winters, CBE, Group Chief Executive, Standard Chartered Bank and more.

 

Strengthening the business case for sustainability

Two reports will be launched during Ecosperity Week, presenting the immense opportunities in sustainable development for the region, and the possible pathways and considerations for businesses:

  • The New Nature Economy: Asia’s Next Wave report highlights the potential economic impact of climate change and nature loss in Asia, and makes the business case for nature-positive solutions in the region. It looks at the risks, opportunities and financing for a nature-positive economy in Asia. The report is published by AlphaBeta, Temasek and the World Economic Forum.
  • The Southeast Asia Green Economy 2021 Report: Opportunities on the Road to Net Zero takes stock of Southeast Asia’s progress against its climate ambitions, highlights the imperatives and commercial opportunities on the journey to net zero, maps the landscape of green capital flows in the region, and the tangible individual and collective actions that can make the vision of a sustainable Southeast Asia a reality at scale. The report is published by Bain & Company, Microsoft and Temasek.  
     

Charting a roadmap towards a sustainable future in Asia

As part of Ecosperity Week 2021, BlackRock, International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Temasek will convene the first-ever Singapore Sustainable Investing & Financing Conference (SSIFC) on 30 September to spark deep conversations about the drivers needed to catalyse sustainable investing and financing. The event will bring together key actors from the finance sector to discuss what is critically needed to accelerate ESG integration, sustainable financing and impact investing in the region.

Inspiring the next generation of climate changemakers

Ecosperity Week will also feature programme elements for a general public audience that are designed to inspire the imagination of a more sustainable future:

  • A special edition of  Ecosperity Conversations: Reconnecting with Nature will feature world-renowned primatologist Dr Jane Goodall DBE, alongside young climate leaders in a panel discussion on the impact of COVID-19 on nature, the role of nature in sustainable development, and how today’s youth can become a force for nature.
  • A three-part mini documentary titled Climate Trailblazers: Reimagining Our Future will explore the challenges facing our energy, materials and food sectors and showcase the emerging, innovative technologies that could us help us produce more with less emissions as our population and needs continue to grow.

Delegates will enjoy a hybrid event experience, comprising in-person plenaries at Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands, and a virtual platform for simulcasts and networking.
