Temasek, in partnership with National Geographic, is proud to announce the winners of the Shoot for Sustainability regional photo competition. The four-week competition, which aims to increase awareness of the role of individuals in protecting the environment and inspire individuals to act on climate change, saw over 1,500 entries from participants across Southeast Asia and India.
The grand prize was awarded to Sutanta Aditya (@sutanta.aditya), whose striking photo ‘Orangutan Reintroduction’ features a veterinarian reintroducing an orphaned baby Sumatran Orangutan back into the wild.
First runner-up Chen Han Qi’s (@hanphotog) ‘Fetching Water’ illustrates how access to clean water is a real issue for many families in the region, while Zay Yar Lin’s (@zayyarlin84) ‘Recycling Factory’ reminds us of the need to beat plastic pollution.
The Top 20 entries from the competition, alongside photos by National Geographic’s Nature Photographer of the Year 2017, Jayaprakash Joghee Bojan and National Geographic Explorer Laurel Chor, will be showcased at Ecosperity Week until 7 June at Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands.

[1ST RUNNER UP]
Fetching Water
Dala Township, Yangon, Myanmar
By Chen Han Qi (@hanphotog)
Unlike in Singapore where treated water is directly supplied to every household, villagers in Dala have to collect water from ponds near their houses for their daily consumption.
With proper rubbish disposal, sanitary facilities and supply of safe portable water to the communities, hopefully the lives of the villagers can be improved.
[2ND RUNNER UP]
Recycling Factory
Insein Township, Yangon, Myanmar
By Zay Yar Lin (@zayyarlin84)
Two children working in a small plastic recycling factory on a hidden street of Yangon, Myanmar. These plastic bottles will later be cleaned and recycled into other useful products.
Approximately 8 million tonnes of plastic waste enter the Earth's oceans every year. Recycling is key to global efforts to reduce plastic in the waste stream.
