Cities play a crucial role in the global decarbonisation agenda; they are home to 55 per cent of the global population, and accounting for over 70 per cent of global emissions today. With the rapid pace of urbanisation, two in three people are expected to live in cities by 2050.
Our built environment is responsible for nearly 40 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions, with building construction and operations contributing 11 per cent and 28 per cent respectively. In Singapore, buildings make up over a third of the country’s electricity consumption. Hence, designing climate-friendly and energy-efficient buildings is crucial to support Singapore’s ambitions of achieving net-zero emissions by or around mid-century.
We cannot solve climate change without transforming our cities and buildings. The integration of buildings, mobility, and infrastructure is crucial to decarbonising urban systems. This involves going beyond greening buildings to implementing solutions at the scale of townships and districts.
